Best Surf Spots in Uluwatu, Bali

WHatsapp
Uluwatu didn't become a surf pilgrimage site by accident. The whole Bukit Peninsula is rimmed with limestone reef that produces some of the most consistent left-handers on the planet, stacked one after another down the coast so that on any given day, something is almost always breaking somewhere. The catch is that "somewhere" changes constantly with the tide and swell — a spot that's firing at 7am might be flat by 10, while the break twenty minutes down the coast is only just waking up.

That's the real argument for having your own transport here, board racks and all. We run BUGORIDE, an open-air buggy built for this exact kind of chasing-the-swell driving — enough room for boards, wetsuits, and a full crew, a sunshade roof for the wait between sessions, and free delivery to your villa so you're not wrestling a longboard onto a scooter at 6am. Here's the real breakdown of where to paddle out.

The wave everyone means when they just say "Uluwatu." Suluban Beach / Blue Point is actually four connected peaks along the same reef: Outside Corner, the heaviest section that only switches on once the swell hits 8 feet or more; Main Peak, the postcard wave that's been in every Bali surf film since 1972; Racetracks, the fast, hollow section south of the peak that rewards speed over style; and Temples, the mellower inside section closer to the cliff that picks up smaller swells. Mid tide works best across the board — it's advanced-level water, with strong currents and a live reef, but the sheer number of peaks means the crowd spreads out more than you'd expect. Access is down through a limestone cave, so bring reef booties if you're precious about your feet.
Uluwatu / Suluban (Blue Point) — The Original
Padang Padang Beach produces one of the most photographed barrels in surfing — a short, heavy, hollow left that peaks on a solid south-to-southwest swell, best from June through September when the dry season delivers its biggest groundswells. It's advanced-only when it's on, and the lineup is famously tight and competitive, but the walk down through the narrow rock slot to the beach is worth it even on a flat day just to watch.
Padang Padang — The Icon
Sitting in the channel between Padang Padang and Bingin, Impossibles is a long, fast left named for how difficult it once was to paddle into. On a big swell it can connect through multiple sections for some of the longest rides on the peninsula. It's serious, advanced-surfer terrain — but the clifftop viewpoint above it is free and makes for one of the better photo stops on this whole coast.
Impossibles — The Connector
Directly across the channel from Padang Padang's heavy lefts, Baby Padang (also called Padang Padang Rights) is almost always breaking, works on a small-to-medium swell, and is one of the genuinely good beginner waves in Bali. It's no accident that Padang Padang Surf Camp, coaching surfers on the Bukit since 2005, runs the bulk of its lessons right here.
Baby Padang — Where Everyone Starts
Bingin Beach is technically advanced but genuinely welcoming to confident intermediates on smaller days at mid-to-high tide — there's even a section that works for beginners when the tide's up. At its best, on a southwest swell with an offshore east wind, it forms an almost mechanically perfect left that barrels like clockwork. The cliffside warungs stacked above the break make it the best spectator beach on the peninsula, surfing or not.
Bingin — Style Over Size
Balangan Beach is intermediate-to-advanced water, breaking best on a southwest swell at low-to-mid tide, and rewards patience with rides that can run 100 meters on a clean day. It sees noticeably fewer people in the water than Uluwatu or Padang Padang, and the beachfront warungs here are as laid-back as the surf crowd.
Balangan — Long Rides, Fewer Crowds
Unlike almost everywhere else on this list, Dreamland Beach breaks over sand, not reef, which makes it the most forgiving spot on the peninsula for anyone still finding their feet. Bali Bisa Surf School and Dreamland Surf School both run lessons here, and even on days it's too small or messy to bother with elsewhere, Dreamland tends to have something rideable.
Dreamland — The Learner's Beach
Here's the twist: while every other break on this list peaks in dry season, Nyang Nyang Beach actually works best from November to April, on a southwest swell with an offshore north wind at high tide. It's a short, punchy right-hander over a reef shelf — a genuine change from the lefts that dominate everywhere else on the Bukit — and the steep, rough access track down to the beach keeps the crowd thin even in season. Advanced surfers only; the reef here doesn't forgive mistakes.
Nyang Nyang — The Off-Season Secret
If you didn't bring a board, both BGS Uluwatu and Drifter Surf Shop on Jalan Labuan Sait rent boards and sell reef booties, wax, and the rest of the kit, with decent coffee on hand for the wait between sessions. For lessons beyond Dreamland, Padang Padang Surf Camp runs a proper coaching program with sessions split by ability level.

However you're spending the session, post-surf sunset drinks at Single Fin overlooking the Uluwatu break are close to mandatory — the original surf bar on this coast, and still the best seat to watch the wave you just rode (or watched other people ride) light up gold at the end of the day.
Gear and Lessons
May to October brings consistent south-easterly trades and the biggest, cleanest swells across Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin, Balangan, and Impossibles — June through August is peak swell season, with late September into October offering the same water quality and fewer crowds. Nyang Nyang runs the opposite calendar, firing best in the wet season from November to April. Check tide times before committing to a spot; nearly everything on this list is reef, and low tide can expose coral that's hidden and forgiving just a few hours later at mid tide.

Given how spread out these breaks are — and how much gear a real surf trip involves — BUGORIDE is built for exactly this kind of day: room for boards, bags, and a full crew, chasing whichever break looks best at whichever tide you've got. Fully insured, delivered to your villa, and a lot easier to park at a cliffside break than a rental car. Check the forecast, pick your peak, and go.
